Sustainable Development

August 26, 2002 06:35 PM

Today the UN Summit on Sustainable Development started.

According to the California Department of Water Resources, unless more water supplies are found, in 2020 California will have a water shortfall equivalent to the amount of water we currently consume. That's 18 years away. And America is considered "water-rich."

All throughout the world there are water crises. India is damming and diverting the Ganges river causing Bangladesh major problems. Namibia is planning on building a pipeline to take water from the Okavango River, which it shares with Botswana. Botswana is not happy.

2/3rds of the earth's surface is covered in water, yet only 0.08% of it is usable to us.

And I thought $4 water at clubs was bad.
