Deep Sadness Envelopes Baghdad

March 18, 2003 03:35 PM

Anthony Shadid writes about the sadness encompassing Baghdad in the final days before war.

Maher Samarai compare's Bush's promise of liberation to the words of Major General Stanley Maude, the British commander who invaded Baghdad in 1917, "We came as liberators, not as conquerors."

Maher Samarai: "That's exactly what Bush said. Exactly the same sentence. It's a flashback to when Iraqis were still without shoes, without clothes, and the oil went directly to other people's pockets. You can't trust the Westerners."
