The Liberation Fantasy

March 29, 2003 05:43 PM

When is the U.S. going to give up this fantasy that it is liberating the people of Iraq? They sure don't seem to want American liberation, and isn't forcing the will of the U.S. on the people of Iraq the antithesis of freedom and democracy? Sure, the Sunni near Baghdad were expected to fight, but even the the Shia in southern Iraq would rather have Saddam evil than Bush evil.

The Bush Administration is backpedaling now trying to convince us that the Iraqi people will be happy to have us as soon as they realize Saddam is really gone for good. Supposedly, they're terrified of what he might do to them if he were to remain in power, yet they seem to be even more terrified of what Bush will do if he seizes control.

The evil you know is better than the evil you don't.
