Looking for the silver lining...

January 19, 2004 6:46 PM

Matt Yglesias has some positive spin on Dean's 3rd place finish: "It's become a bit of a cliché that Dean is his own worst enemy, but tonight I think it could be quite literally true. If Dean were to finish a disappointing third behind Kerry and Edwards, he'd still be left with plurality support around the country and the opposition would be hopelessly divided leaving him well-positioned to cruise to the nomination."

Tonight was really disappointing. I just can't believe this entrance poll: 75% opposed the war, and of that 27% support Kerry and 25% Dean. Iowa just told the country that the war doesn't matter.

Reports are that Gephardt is pulling out tomorrow.

More from the archive in Elections, Howard Dean.

This is exactly right. The war is not an issue yet. Dean should bury it, or at least stop valuable ad dollars on it. Everyone knows he's against the war, but it's not the deciding issue for most people. The deciding issues are who will beat Bush and who will be a good leader. Dean has a record as a Governor, and I just don't see him putting it out there.
