The Klebolds: Don't forgive us

May 16, 2004 10:20 AM

David Brooks scored an interview with the parents of Dylan Klebold.

That first night, their lawyer said to them, "Dylan isn't here anymore for people to hate, so people are going to hate you." Even as we spoke this week, Tom had in front of him the poll results, news stories and documents showing that 83 percent of Americans had believed the parents were partly to blame. Their lives are now pinioned to this bottomless question: Who is responsible?
...
In general, Tom said, "most people have been good-hearted." Their friends rallied around. Their neighbors call to warn them if an unfamiliar car lurks in the neighborhood. There is a moment of discomfort when they hand over a credit card at a store, but there have been few bad scenes. One clerk looked at the name and remarked to Susan, "Boy, you're a survivor, aren't you."

The most infuriating incident, Susan said, came when somebody said, "I forgive you for what you've done." Susan insists, "I haven't done anything for which I need forgiveness."

"Susan insists, "I haven't done anything for which I need forgiveness.""

She just ignored her child as he turned into a homicidal maniac. If she feels she doesn't need to apologize for her murdering son, maybe she should apologize for her gross failures as a parent and a human being.

why not put some of the blame on the little pricks that pushed them to do this. or the school officails who allow this kind of treatment of them to happen.

From all accounts Klebold did his fair share of bullying and intimidation of his fellow students with threats of murder and beatings to those he saw as "inferior".

One can tell the anguish of poor Dylan by the videos he left behind. One can also see his anger at bullies by his victims:

Isaiah Shoels, 18, senior. Only black youth shot. Suffered health problems as a child and had heart surgery twice. Wanted to attend an arts college and become a music executive.

Cassie Bernall, junior. Two years ago, after becoming a born-again Christian, she became active in church youth programs and Bible study groups

Kelly Fleming, 16. Aspiring songwriter and author. Wrote scores of poems and short stories based on her life experiences.

Rachel Scott, 17. Played lead in a student-written school play, "Smoke in the Room." Active in Celebration Christian Fellowship church.

John Tomlin, 16, sophomore. Enjoyed driving off-road in the nearby Rocky Mountains in his beat-up Chevy pickup. Worked after-school in gardening store and belonged to a church youth group.

Lauren Townsend, 18, senior. Was captain of girls' varsity volleyball team, coached by her mother. Other players said she was "consumed" by the sport. Member of the National Honor Society. She planned to attend Colorado State University on an academic scholarship and become a wildlife biologist, like her oldest brother.

Kyle Velasquez: A special needs student, neighbors say Kyle touched everyone he met. Friends describe him as a big, happy boy, a “gentle giant” who always wore a smile

William "Dave" Sanders, 47, a computer and business teacher for 24 years.

Looks like the usual list of liberal targets. I'll never understand the liberal fascination with murder. Grandma spending your inheritance, time for euthanasia. Defective baby - splatter his brains across the operating table as he's born. President or Secretary of Defense pissing you off, call for his execution in polital publications. Christians bothering you, have them jailed or blame them for your woes and shoot them in a blaze of glory.

"liberals putting people on death row in record numbers"

Yes its much better to kill innocents without benefit of trial.

As for the Iraqis and Afghans, their stiuation is similar to the Vietnamese, see how well that turned out. Not one of the Vietnam era media stars has expressed the slightest sense of responsibility for the hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians slaughtered in Vietnam after the Communists took over -- more people than were killed during the war that they so much lamented.
