Oops, I meant FactCheck.ORG
October 5, 2004 9:21 PM
As noted in the comments here, Cheney screwed up in the debate and urged people to check "FactCheck.com" for a debunking of the Halliburton charges. A very common mistake, it's actually FactCheck.org. But, unfortunately for the President, FactCheck.com takes you directly to George Soros's website which states flatly in big bold type:
Sweet justice. UPDATE: Not only that, but Lauren from San Diego writes in and notes that FOXNEWS.com links to factcheck.com in their article about the debate. UPDATE: Apparently, factcheck.com was up for sale, and UPDATE: Soros' people deny they had anything to do with it. They will be posting something on georgesoros.com soon. UPDATE: CNN just did an item on this, reporting that Soros was responsible -- which I've heard is not true -- but no official statement from Soros yet. So who did it? UPDATE: FOXNEWS.com changed their story:
FINAL UPDATE: Soros did not purchase the domain, the owner of FactCheck.com simply redirected to GeorgeSoros.com as soon as they noticed the site was getting a hundred hits a second. "This was to relieve stress on the service and to express a political point of view," UPDATE: And, Atrios points out that Cheney lied about meeting John Edwards for the first time at the debate. Here's the photo from February 2001:
