Once & Again Pulled

March 15, 2002 10:51 AM

The ABC affiliate in Lynchburg, Virginia, WSET, pulled the plug on this week's episode of Once & Again, due to two teenage girls kissing.

This happens to be the first episode of Once & Again I ever watched. This is surprising, since I just found out it's created by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick - the same people behind My So Called Life. How did I not know about this show until now?

It's fitting that the only affiliate to pull this episode is the home of Jerry Falwell's cult and Liberty University.

I spent two semesters at Liberty in the mid 90's, and I was disgusted at the level of hatred openly expressed towards homosexuality. It was literally a rallying cry at the thrice-weekly required convocations that Falwell led.

The only way I was able to cope with this hell hole was to work in the computer lab, and that's where I spent most of my time. Part of my duties were to monitor the logs in the Internet monitoring system I designed, looking for people viewing porn and other things against university policy. I busted a few people here and there. One day I found a guy looking at gay porn. It struck me how horrible this guy's life must be at Liberty. I thought I hated it there, and here was a guy spending his college years at a university that openly mocked his lifestyle simply because he liked guys.

This was just one of the many reasons why I dropped out of Liberty.
