Mapping social networks with email. Layoffs were coming, so a friend of mine once had to rank his employees. Like any reticent manager, he balked at the idea. Forced to make a decision, he simply asked everyone who they went to for advice. Collate the results, there's the ranking. Hacking into the email stream solves this problem far more elegantly.
