Democrat Recall Strategy

July 4, 2003 7:01 AM

I don't believe this has been reported anywhere, so consider this a jimlog first. Rumor has it that Dianne Feinstein (Senator) cut a deal with Cruz Bustamante (Lt. Governor) concerning the recall election. Feinstein will run for Governor, and then appoint Bustamante to the Senate to fill her seat.

Both Feinstein and Bustamante have publicly stated they have no desire to run in the recall election, but the election is almost guaranteed at this point, and the Democrats need a popular moderate that can beat Schwarzeneggar. Feinstein is widely regarded as the Democrats' only hope. By cutting a deal with Bustamante, she can keep him out of the race, preventing a split vote.

This has the added advantage of getting a Hispanic into the Senate, even though he isn't the brightest bulb on the tree.

Interesting. I haven't seen any confirmation on this from the press, but the national news outlets are usually only good at publishing prefab stuff like press releases anyway.

Personally, I think this is a good strategy - encourage Democratic voters to show up in force, vote against the recall, and vote for Feinstein to replace Davis, in case the recall passes.
