Politicians manipulating the press? Never!

January 18, 2004 8:20 PM

An anonymous Republican on why the State of the Union is the day after the Iowa caucus:

Was it planned? Yes. The fact that the Iowa caucus was going to be held on a certain date was not unknown to people in the White House. What you achieve by doing it quickly is to get people to focus on the president's positive agenda after two weeks of people beating his brains in and criticizing every aspect of his policies.

Well, duh! The White House vehemently denies this, of course. But come on, this is the same Republican Party that scheduled their convention the week before 9/11 in -- you guessed it -- New York City.

Meanwhile, Dean pulled a bit of a news cycle coup this morning by attending church with Jimmy Carter the day before the Iowa caucus. Instead of last minute stumping in Iowa, Dean used the opportunity to make it look like he was Carter's endorsement. Well, there was no endorsement, and it turns out, Dean invited himself over. But most people won't realize that, and Dean got the image of him standing next to a former President all over the cable news networks taking coverage away from the surging Kerry & Edwards campaigns.

Being publicly rebuffed by a political pariah like Jimmy Carter is hardly a coup. What next a private consult with Walter Mondale on how to run a successful election?
