The 60 Minutes Interview -- STUNNING!

January 11, 2004 7:18 PM

Rumsfeld warned O'Neill not to speak out.

Bush on Iraq, January 2001: "Go find me a way to do this."

There's a March 5th, 2001 document identifying contractors to take over the oilfields in Iraq. [UPDATE]

From day one, the administration was saying X and actively doing Y.

There's "a praetorian guard" that shields the President from opposing views, because "that's the way Dick likes it."

O'Neill felt "bullied" by Bush. Bush even made fun of him at an economic summit.

Bush on the second round of tax cuts: "We already gave it to the rich people -- why are we doing it again? ... Shouldn't we be giving money to the middle?" Rove kept the President in line though, repeatedly telling him to "stick to principle, stick to principle."

O'Neill: "I can't imagine I will be attacked for telling the truth. Why would I be attacked for telling the truth?"

UPDATE: The Center for American Progress dug up these quotes with Bush praising O'Neill:

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan lashed out at O'Neill saying, "it appears that the world according to Mr. O'Neill is more about trying to justify his own opinion than looking at the reality of the results." But the President has articulated a different assessment of O'Neill's integrity. Announcing his nomination in December 20, 2000, President Bush said that when Paul O'Neill speaks, he "speaks with authority and conviction and knowledge." A month later, at his swearing in, the President said O'Neill "has earned a reputation as a straight shooter."
