Iraq's 9/11. How will they respond?

March 3, 2004 5:32 PM

Josh Marshall points out that yesterday's bombings amount to an Iraqi 9/11.

Just hours before a mortar attack killed at least 85 people in the holy city of Karbala, thousands of men were splattering the streets with their blood in a Shiite ritual honoring the seventh-century martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

The total bodycount is now up to 271, according to the president of the Iraqi Governing Council. I would alter Josh's comment slightly. It's more like a 9/11 on Super Bowl Sunday.

Iraqis are mourning their dead for three days, and will then sign an interim Constitution on Friday.
