California DMV hooks up to Donate Life registry!!

July 11, 2006 11:09 AM

Big news today. The California DMV program that lets people sign up to be organ donors will switch from using the existing sticker approach to an actual registry.

Before, when you said you wanted to be an organ donor, you were literally just putting a sticker on your driver's license. It had no legal standing and the decision was still in the hands of the surviving family -- at a time when this is exactly not what they want to be asked. 40% of families decline. 40%!!

Now with the Donate Life registry, the decision is entirely in the hands of the person with the organs. Which is what nearly everyone thought they had done when they put the sticker on their licenses.

You can sign up on the California registry here, and find out how to become an organ donor in other states here.

This simple bureaucratic change will shorten transplant lists and save thousands of lives. Maybe even mine.

Matt:

Thanx for posting the link because it reminded me to register, something I'd meant to do (but forgot) after you told me in the interview one needs to do more than just fill out the DMV form and affix the sticker.
