People Powered Film

Check out the fantastic article on the front page of the Sunday Arts section in tomorrow's Washington Post. William Booth: "His Fans Greenlight the Project"

Jim Gilliam is only 28 years old. In a previous incarnation, he was a venture capitalist and a chief technology officer. Now his voice is a old man's rasp and he does not have the strength to cook his own food. He is waiting for a double lung transplant. But sick in his bedroom, Gilliam had a revolutionary idea: Why not get the audience to pay for a movie before it gets made?

He calls it "People Powered Film." It could be the start of something.

Right on! For filmmakers interested... I'm creating Brave New Theaters as the people powered film platform available freely to everyone at no charge. Ultimately, I'm hoping to democratize all the functions of the movie business -- funding, distribution, and marketing. Everything but actually making the movie.

Filmmakers right now can use Brave New Theaters to organize grassroots screenings right from their website, like we've done with the Wal-Mart movie and are doing this fall with Iraq for Sale -- details here. But stay tuned.. much more to come in the future.
